How to assess an Instagram account and its real audience

A buyer’s checklist for Instagram Insights, engagement, content rights, connected Meta assets and account-transfer risks.

An attractive grid can hide a weak audience or complicated ownership. Compare Insights with the public profile and identify the people, licenses and business assets behind the content.

Look past the grid

Request a dated walkthrough of Insights for accounts reached, engaged accounts, follower growth and audience geography. Compare Reels, feed posts and Stories over the same period. Look at typical recent results, not only the most-shared Reel.

Sample comments, saves and repeat interactions. A high follower total paired with low recent reach, irrelevant comments or a sharp niche change calls for more questions. If sales are claimed, ask for attributable order data rather than assuming every profile visit became a customer.

  • Compare recent formats on equal date ranges.
  • Check audience language and region for fit.
  • Ask about paid promotion and follower acquisition.

Map rights and Meta connections

Clarify who owns the photos, videos, brand name and creator likeness. A photographer’s license or a music permission may not include reuse by a different business. Ask about branded-content obligations, removed posts and account-status notices.

Identify the linked Facebook Page, Meta Business Portfolio, ad account, catalog and shopping setup. These may belong to another entity and can have different administrators or eligibility rules. Request evidence of the exact assets included rather than a screenshot of a single profile.

  • List connected Pages and business assets by identifier.
  • Check content and music usage rights.
  • Review account-status restrictions and pending appeals.

Verify control without assuming permission

Review Instagram and Meta’s current terms: an account sale or login transfer may be prohibited even if credentials can be changed. Official business permissions for an associated asset do not necessarily authorize selling the Instagram account itself.

If an allowed process applies, document the account identifier, receiving permissions and recovery settings. Do not send login codes in public messages. After legitimate control changes, check active sessions and connected apps. If ownership or platform permission is unclear, do not treat a temporary login as a completed handoff.

  • Confirm which asset, not just which username, is included.
  • Check recovery contacts and existing admins.
  • Pause if the proposed transaction conflicts with platform terms.
